Wellington’s culinary scene comes alive this winter with Visa Wellington On a Plate, Aotearoa’s largest and most delicious food festival running throughout August 2026. What started as a small celebration of local dining has grown into a month-long extravaganza that transforms Wellington and the surrounding region into a food lover’s paradise — from the Kāpiti Coast and Porirua, through the Hutt Valley and Wairarapa, right into the heart of the capital’s vibrant cafés, bars and restaurants.

Over four weeks, hundreds of experiences invite you to taste your way through Wellington’s world-class gastronomy. The festival mixes ticketed culinary events, from long degustations and chef collaborations to masterclasses and immersive dining experiences, with non-ticketed pop-ups and themed menus at participating venues. Whether you’re indulging in multi-course feasts or discovering creative dishes off the beaten path, there’s something to excite every palate. 

One of the festival’s most beloved highlights, Burger Wellington, runs from 3–23 August, challenging chefs across the region to craft the ultimate burger creation — from classic comfort builds to wildly inventive flavour mash-ups. It’s a feast of creativity, camaraderie and community as locals and visitors alike sample and judge the best burgers in town. 

Visa Wellington On a Plate also celebrates the theme “Word of Mouth” for 2026 — a tribute to the recommendations and shared food experiences that inspire the best discoveries around the table.
