Fat Freddy’s Drop – Based On A True Story 21st Anniversary Tour 2026

1–3 May 2026, Michael Fowler Centre

Wellington music lovers have a major celebration to look forward to this May as legendary Kiwi outfit Fat Freddy’s Drop return to the capital for a special three-night run of shows. The band will take over the iconic Michael Fowler Centre stage to perform their groundbreaking 2005 debut album Based On A True Story in full, marking over two decades since its release and honouring the legacy of founding member Chris ‘MU’ Faiumu.

Originally released independently in 2005, *Based On A True Story* became one of Aotearoa’s most enduring records — spending an impressive 111 weeks in the Top 40, winning eight New Zealand Music Awards and earning international acclaim. Its genre-defying fusion of funk, dub, soul and roots paved the way for Fat Freddy’s Drop’s unmistakable sound and helped elevate New Zealand music on the world stage.

This Wellington leg of the band’s 21st anniversary tour is especially poignant — their first live performances since the passing of MU — and sees them revisiting the songs that launched their journey. Expect hypnotic grooves, soulful rhythms and the immersive live energy that has made Fat Freddy’s Drop a must-see act at festivals and venues around the globe.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan or discovering their music for the first time, these shows promise a powerful and uplifting live experience steeped in Wellington’s rich musical spirit. Tickets are on sale now through official ticketing partners — book early to be part of this extraordinary anniversary celebration in May.
